The age of cable TV is being brought to a close by the rise of new streaming service giants Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime. The most anticipated new service to arrive is Disney+, which launches sometime in late 2019. Will Disney’s new service be the Thanos snap that spells the end for traditional cable TV? Based on their catalog alone, I think so.
Executives at Disney have announced that very soon after the launch of Disney+, every film in their vault will be included. This includes Star Wars, Marvel, Pixar, and National Geographic. Here is the exact quote from Disney CEO Bob Iger:
“The service, which I mentioned earlier is going to launch later in the year, is going to combine what we call library product, movies, and television, with a lot of original product as well, movies and television. And at some point fairly soon after launch it will house the entire Disney motion picture library, so the movies that you speak of that traditionally have been kept in a ‘vault’ and brought out basically every few years will be on the service. And then, of course, we’re producing a number of original movies and original television shows as well that will be Disney-branded.”
In addition to their huge library of critically acclaimed movies, a host of original content has been announced to launch on the service. Jon Favreau has already begun filming an original live-action Star Wars series called The Mandalorian. This series alone would be enough to get me to sign up. Other original Star Wars projects have been confirmed as well.
A live-action series centered around the Marvel character Loki has also been confirmed with Tom Hiddleston reprising the role.
Will Disney+ Kill Netflix?
The short answer is I don’t think so. Netflix has notably been working to expand their catalog of original content over everything these last few years. It will feel different once all of the Disney movies and TV shows are removed once their contracts end, but I have faith in the original content being enough to get viewers to stay.
How Much Will Disney+ Cost?
There are a few rumored prices floating around on the internet, but the best piece of info I found comes from Bob Iger once again. He was quoted saying that Disney+ will start out cheaper than Netflix. Other sources place the cost in the $8-$14 per month range. Would you pay for that? I sure would.
